Today
the feeding and care of wildlife has become a large business.
Many deer and exotic animal operations include the services
of biologists and nutritionists to assist with management efforts.
The importance of balanced nutrition has now worked its way
into the spotlight as a major factor in the production of quality
animals for harvest. Most experts do agree on one issue with regard
to nutrition--the range (forage areas) of these animals rarely
provides for all the nutritional needs of the herd.
Postive Feed Ltd., a company with more than
32 years of experience
in the manufacturing of supplements for the livestock industry,
now introduces EGS 16. We have joined efforts with A.J. Higginbottom
of HMS Zoo Diets Inc. to create a unique wild game supplement.
By using our ALL-IN-ONE (patent #5,622,739) process, Postive
Feed has created a hard crystallized molasses product with a
swirled vein of loose mineral, proteins, and salt formulated
for the nutritional needs of deer and exotic game animals. Our
objective is to balance the existing forage and browse in most
conditions. The EGS 16 feeding program is focused on maximizing
antler/horn development and weaned fawn success.
While many
products on the market today are used as attractants, few have
placed the importance of sound nutritional supplementation as
the EGS 16.
This tub is not an
attractant, you need to put corn, and/or pellets on top of this
product, for the animal to acquire a taste for the tub.

For
introduction to animals for the first time, an adequate supply
and placement by frequently traveled areas is essential -
provide one tub per 20 to 30 head of animals. Average range
conditions require 2 - 8 ounces per animal daily. Adequate
forage or browse must be available at all times. Winter consumption
will be slightly higher. Consumption will respond to forage
quality; the poorer the quality, the higher the consumption.
This is not an attractant - it is a nutritional supplement.
This supplement may not meet the total requirements for all
nutritional situations, therefore other sources of mineral
should be made available.

| The
management of exotic animal herds has taken many different
turns over the years. But today, nearly all experts agree
that supplemental nutritional support is required to attain
the maximum development that genetics will allow. No matter
how easy and convenient a program may be, the first requirement
is that it be nutritionally correct. EGS 16 has taken
the pioneering work done by Dr. Duane E. Ullery of Michigan
State as a base, and then expanded that work to incorporate
the very latest developments. The basic nutrition is the
same as that used in an estimated 80% of zoos and prestigious
exotic animal breeding farms in North America. While the
challenges of managing exotic animal collections in zoos
and free-range game farms and ranches are very different,
the basic nutritional requirements are similar. The need
to add supplementation to balance the existing forage
is all the same. Studies have shown that many of the exotics
have greater requirements for certain minerals and vitamins.
It has been demonstrated that African hoof stock give significantly
better performance when supplied with double the currently
recommended levels of selenium for domestic livestock.
It has also been demonstrated that there is an optimum
relationship between selenium and vitamin E. Also unique
to this program is the ability to deliver live lactobacillus
acidophilus to the animal on a daily basis. The benefits
to feeding lactobacillus acidophilus is well known, but
until now there has been no practical way to administer
it. The purpose is to positively manage the micro flora
makeup of the gut, and thus reduce the stress coming from
the daily exposure to pathogenic organisms such as E-coli
and salmonella. |

There
has always been an agreement that the three main factors
in maximum antler growth are age, genetics and nutrition.
Dr. Duane E. Ullery in the Michigan Agricultural Experiment
Station Journal No. 10121 clearly set out the mechanism
for antler growth regardless of age or genetics. The timing
of the delivery of the nutrients to the animal may be
one of the most important factors. After the rut and into
the winter season is when the animal is preparing for
the next production cycle of antler growth and for fawns
to be dropped in the spring. If the body resources, at
this critical time, are adequate for growth of antlers
or the production of twin or triplet fawns, then the chance
for development to maximize genetic capability is possible.
It goes without saying that once the animal has started
upon the maximum potential pattern, the nutrition must
be present throughout the cycle to fully realize that
potential. Supplemental feeding may actually have a greater
impact on the doe herd. You might expect heavier birth
weights and a higher weaned fawn-to-doe ratio. The management
of deer has certainly recognized the advantage of proper
genetics and adequate age. EGS 16 was developed to assist
with the nutrient supplementation of these animals.
