The most convenient way to control horn flies
in beef and dairy cattle is to supplement with PF tubs
containing Altosid®
IGR Feed-Thru. Altosid®
is an insect
growth regulator (IGR) that passes through the animal and into
the manure, where horn flies lay their eggs. It breaks the
life cycle by preventing horn fly pupae from developing into
biting adult flies. Altosid®
eliminates the expense,
labor, and stress on your cattle associated with sprays, pour-ons,
dusts, and ear tags. There's no need to round up or handle
cattle because the animals spread the horn fly control as they
graze.
Left untreated, a few horn flies can quickly explode to
populations of 1,000 to 4,000 flies or more per animal.
Horn flies emerge in the spring when average daily temperatures
reach 65 degrees for a period of two weeks.

FEEDING AND MANAGEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
When used as directed, 8:8 Mineral Tub Plus Altosid®
IGR will provide sufficient (S)-methoprene insect
growth regulator to prevent the emergence of adult horn flies from
manure of treated cattle. Existing adult horn flies will not
be affected. Start feeding before horn flies appear and
continue use until cold weather marks the end of the horn fly
season. Allow free choice to cattle. Cattle should
consume an average of 0.4 ounces of 8:8 Mineral Tub Plus Altosid®
IGR per 100 lbs. of animal body weight per day.
*Assure cattle are not starved for nutrients prior to feeding 8:8
Mineral Tub Plus Altosid®
IGR.
*
Offer cattle one 8:8 Mineral Tub Plus Altosid®
IGR for every 15 to 25 head of cattle.
*
Remove all other self limiting nutritional supplements.
*
Locate 8:8 Mineral Tub Plus Altosid®
IGR where cattle congregate (watering,
shade areas).
*
Replenish 8:8 Mineral Tub Plus Altosid®
IGR on a regular basis as needed.
*
If intake of 8:8 Mineral Tub Plus Altosid®IGR
Tub is above or below 0.4 ounces per 100 pounds animal body
weight per day, decrease or increase the number of feeding
locations and/or change location(s) to areas more frequented by
cattle.
Introduction of this product after adult horn fly infestation is
established will require treatment of cattle with adulticides if
elimination of the adult fly population is desired.
FOR EFFECTIVE CONTROL WITH ALTOSID®
(IGR)
* Begin
feeding PF tubs with Altosid®
(IGR) before the flies appear.
* If
feeding in free-choice feeds such as supplements, put out a 30 day
supply.
* Use one
tub per 15 - 25 animals
* Place
the tubs near watering holes and loafing areas.
* Check
consumption for a few days. Increase or decrease number of
tubs, or move them if necessary, to adjust for proper consumption.
|
*
The horn fly is one of the most important and economically
damaging pest of range cattle. In the United States
they cost cattle producers approximately $876 million every
year.
* Altosid® (IGR)
unique ingredient, methoprene, even controls horn flies
resistant to the organophosphates and pyrethroids commonly
used in conventional horn fly control products.
*
Scientists estimate that an economical, effective program
keeps the fly population below 200 flies per animal.
*
Adult flies migrate from other herds. Altosid®
(IGR)
feed thru does not kill adult flies.
*Altosid®
(IGR) prevents the flies from successfully
multiplying, breaking the life cycle. |
